Are the passwords really random?โผ
Yes. They come from your browser's cryptographically secure random generator (crypto.getRandomValues). Selection avoids modulo bias, so every character or word is equally likely.
What is a passphrase and is it better than a password?โผ
A passphrase is several random words, such as those from the EFF's long word list of 7,776 words. Each word adds about 12.9 bits of strength, so five words are far stronger than most eight-character passwords and much easier to remember and type.
How long should my password be?โผ
For passwords, 16 characters or more with a mix of types is a good default. For passphrases, five words is a strong start and six or more is excellent. Length can be set from 8 to 64.
Is the generated password saved or sent anywhere?โผ
No. It is created in your browser and exists only on this page. Nothing is sent, logged or saved. Copy it into your password manager straight away.
Where does the word list come from?โผ
The passphrase mode uses the EFF Large Wordlist for passphrases, created by the Electronic Frontier Foundation. It is downloaded to your browser once, and the random choices are still made on your device.
